EAC SAMMIT ON NOVEMBER 20, 2009
In what is likely to be one of the most significant achievements in the history of the EAC, PEFA will bring into the fold the vast experience and resources of the European Community to form a strategic partnership. For several years since the creation of the EAC, the Secretariat has been holding meetings with the European Commission on Technical and other logistical issues. It is expected that in the near future, EAC will start reaping the benefits of the cooperation. Under the partnership, European Commission will provide technical support and funds for major projects.
The November Summit meeting was represented by all the five Heads of State: presidents Mwai Kibaki of Kenya, Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Paul Kagame and Pierre Nkurunziza of Rwanda and Burundi respectively.
The major focus was on regional planning, infrastructure, the social sector and political integration. During the meeting, the regional leaders also discussed the delicate issue of customs and trade; administration and financial regulations to govern the numerous institutions that have been set up since the inception of bloc.
During the November 20 Summit meeting, the Heads of State also conferred awards to student winners of the EAC Essay writing competition and laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new EAC headquarters. The events were organized as part of the ceremony to mark the 10th EAC Anniversary.
